Saturday 23rd
Arriving in what I thought was due time at Philadelphia airport I got a reminder just how crazy the lines can be for a Saturday morning domestic flight and I think the only reason I didn’t miss my flight was that I inadvertently lined op in the “families and preferred” queue! Once I arrived I did a quick walk around a sunny but chilly central Boston:
And after having reached my hotel in Cambridge there was also time for an evening stroll along that river named Charles:
When I got to the Sinclair Sylvan Esso were about to finish their set. The sound system here was well suited to their style, louder and with more deep end bass. As expected attendance was better than at the World Cafe and the “Saturday night out” vibe was on. Also of course the home town factor was not to be neglected. The venue is quite new - apparently it used to be a movie theatre. Very nice place not unlike the Bowery with a bit of balcony space available too.
Once again Juliana was just beaming and delivered another “signals to sound guy turns into funny hand dance” thing. Despite the Saturday night factor it became clear that most of the people there were seriously into the works of either Juliana or Matthew (or both). Biggest crowd reaction was probably for Out There closely followed by Live On Tomorrow so yeah I guess that the Juliana fans slightly outnumbered the Nada Surf followers.
For Live On Tomorrow Juliana made her solo stand out a bit more by using an overdrive pedal which she’d just picked up “just for you” as she made sure to remark. And those Nada Surf songs - now I thoroughly started to enjoy them - especially Beautiful Beat and Inside of Love.
Just like it had been the case the 2 previous nights Matthew had one or more family members attending and tonight Juliana also had her mom and stepdad in the audience.
Did I mention that Fruit Fly makes an awesome last song - I guess I did :) Identical set list again and I guess if I really have to complain a little bit it was somewhat surprising not to see just a few changes, Juliana usually mixes things up a little. Also perhaps a little less stage banter than I've been used to from her solo tours. But all in all this turned out to be 3 nights of musical magic and beautiful beats - so glad I decided to go for it after all!
